Dawn Duncan was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Born into a family with both professional and casual
artists, she has continued that family tradition.
Throughout her High School and University studies, Dawn
pursued her two greatest interests; Visual Arts
and Anthropology. Deciding to major in Anthropology, she
supplemented this degree with both undergraduate and
graduate level drawing and painting courses and later
taught herself watercolour. With a Bachelor of Science
in Anthropology, Dawn has a keen interest in other
cultures, their people, environments and way of life and
expresses this through her artwork. During a year-long
stay in Japan, Dawn began to develop her detailed style
of portraiture.
She has traveled extensively throughout North
America, Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, and the
Caribbean, drawing and painting the people and
landscapes of the countries she has visited. In 1991,
Dawn moved to the Dominican Republic where she owned and
operated her own custom art and commercial design
business. In her three years spent in the D.R. Dawn was
involved in many interesting and exciting projects, some
of which included large wall murals, commissioned
paintings for hotels and businesses, group art shows,
illustrations for a children’s book, painted renditions
of blue prints, and countless commercial designs – from
T-shirt logos to menu design.
In 1994, Dawn returned to Canada, was married and,
over the next 10 years in Calgary, she began to build a
reputation as an accomplished portrait artist and took
commissions regularly at her home-based art studio, as
well as participating in several group shows each year.
In 2003, Dawn moved to Florida, and has re-established
her studio and accepts commissions for portraits and
landscapes in graphite pencil, watercolour and oil.
